Isabella

Matías Piñeiro : 2020

Mariel wants to play the role of Isabella in Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure". She has already prepared for an audition, but she is distracted by money problems. In the hope of receiving financial support from her brother, with whom she has had no contact for a long time, Mariel turns to his lover, Luciana, who is also an actress, albeit a more successful one. Luciana agrees to convince him, but only if Mariel goes ahead with the audition. However, luck is seldom on Mariel's side. Time after time, she tries to win this role that persistently eludes her. And time after time, she encounters Luciana, a sort of more successful doppelganger, who leads Mariel to doubt her own ambitions: to act or not to act. Mariel's dilemma intertwines her idea of success with her experience of friendship, motherhood and pursuing a career. Las Mil y Una

Clarisa Navas : 2020
One in a Thousand

Clad in sportswear, 17-year-old Iris dribbles her basketball through the wide courtyards of her social housing estate somewhere in Argentina. She has been expelled from school and spends the warm days and nights with her two best friends – her cousins – in cramped rooms, fiddling with her mobile phone, or on the empty streets of the town. While playing hide-and-seek, the boys disappear with other boys, they strip off in front of the webcam and write passionate texts in which they rail against a heteronormative society. There is a deceptive lightness in the air and the promise that, when it comes to love and sex, anything is possible. When cool and self-confident Renata enters the scene, Iris is fascinated, and it is not long before they begin flirting. But on the estate, the rumours about Renata's past are getting louder and louder. Caught between coming out and cyberbullying, community life and poverty, love and violence, the film captures the transition between the tenderness of childhood and the bitter reality of the adult world. Clarisa Navas's feature debut premiered in the Panorama section at Berlin International Film Festival 2020.

Si yo fuera el invierno mismo

Jazmín López : 2020
If I Were the Winter Itself

Four friends meet on a remote estate to create a cinematic re-enactment of three iconic works that embodied the social and artistic revolution of 50 years ago: La Chinoise (1967) by Jean-Luc Godard, Inextinguishable Fire (1969) by Harun Farocki and the performance Untitled (Facial Hair Transplants) (1972) by Ana Mendieta. The estate is a living backdrop for dreams and phantoms. In all its faded glory, it symbolises the privilege of these young artists who gather there to discuss the meaning of their activist examples. Carmen, the project's initiator, is overwhelmed by feelings and thoughts about her ex-lover, Valentin, whom she can't get off her mind. In long takes, the mobile camera explores the rooms of the estate, where the boundary between acting and being seems to dissolve. The spatial dimensions of the location are used to condense time and link Carmen's subjective and objective realities. During the artistic process the friends undergo and between the lines of their cerebral conversations, this gives rise to a mysterious, deep exploration of the complex mourning of lost love. Jazmín López's second feature premiered in competition in the Bright Future section at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2020.

Elisa y Marcela

Isabel Coixet : 2019
Elisa & Marcela

When Marcela and Elisa meet on their first day in high school, it is love at first sight. A deep friendship begins which soon turns into a romantic relationship. Years later, the two women meet again and decide to live together. Both are respected teachers, but their partnership has to be kept secret from the critical Catholic population. For this reason, Elisa decides to pose as a man and marry Marcela. Their wedding photo depicts two young women, one in a black dress with her hair up, the other with a short haircut and wearing a suit; both are looking hopefully into the future. But their love remains exposed to great dangers. Based on true events, a deeply empathetic rendition of the story of Elisa Sánchez Loriga and Marcela Gracia Ibeas, who were married in the church of San Jorge in A Coruña in northwest Spain in 1901. Facing the Wind

Meritxell Colell Aparicio : 2018
Con el viento

Mónica, 47, has been living in Buenos Aires for 20 years working as a dancer when the news reaches her that her father is on his deathbed back in Spain. By the time she arrives, he's already passed away. Resisting the impulse to return as quickly as possible to her faraway life, she stays to help her mother sell the family home. When it becomes clear that she's not merely bidding farewell to the place of her childhood, the past pushes its way into Mónica's existence with unexpected force; old conflicts and regret about missed chances bubble up, and she realises she has limited time left with her mother. Winter comes. The perpetual silence, the extreme cold and the difficulty of living with her mother are proving tough for Mónica. As still no one ever says much in this family, Mónica works through her inner turmoil primarily via her body, finding an outlet in dance. The film tells the story of a family unable to communicate and is a thoughtful and loving portrait of a traditional rural lifestyle which is beginning to disappear. It's a story about distances. But most of all, it is an inner journey to learn again how to live and love better. Meritxell Colell Aparicio's feature debut premiered in the Forum section at Berlin International Film Festival 2018, and was winner of the Silver Biznaga for Best Spanish Film at Festival de Málaga de Cine Español 2018.

The Idea of a Lake

Milagros Mumenthaler : 2016
La idea de un lago

Inés's father mysteriously disappeared in 1977. Decades later the 35-year old photographer is busy compiling a monograph on her oeuvre, a project that inexplicably leads her back to her youth during Argentinian dictator Jorge Videla's regime. The film opens with her contacting the national forensic lab: can they perhaps help her discover her father's fate? The last photo of him, taken at the lake near La Angostura, comes to her mind. After that she spent her summers without him in this mountainous region at her family's vacation home, far from Buenos Aires' oppressive heat. Cherished memories, such as playing hide and seek, lead to abstract interplays of light in Inés's imagination. Other flashbacks shed new light on her difficult relationship with her mother. Milagros Mumenthaler's second feature premiered in competition at Locarno Film Festival 2016.

Mar

Dominga Sotomayor : 2014

January 2014 on the Argentine coast. Martín and his girlfriend Eli are on holiday in Villa Gesell, a beach resort south of Buenos Aires. The sun is scorching. They read horoscopes, slurp maté, play guitar, and cool off in the ocean and the resort pool. The conversations on the beach and at dinner revolve around life and how it progresses. Nights are punctuated by dogs barking on the street and the piercing sirens of automobile alarms. This 30-something urban couple's relationship seems troubled and on the verge of falling apart. The sudden appearance of Martín's mother does not ease the tension, but just intensifies the distance between the two of them. Based on the intimate portrait of a relationship and family configuration, the film creates a subtle picture of a society in the elusive grip of unconsciousness. Dominga Sotomayor's second feature premiered at Valdivia International Film Festival 2014, and had its international premiere in the Forum section at Berlin International Film Festival 2015.

Mariposa

Marco Berger : 2015
Butterfly

A butterfly, a creature symbolising rebirth and a new beginning, epitomises Romina's and Germán's world, a world that consists of two parallel realities. In one of them they grow up as siblings who desire each other and try to give shape to their love without sexual fulfilment; in the other they are a young man and woman who form an awkward friendship instead of succumbing to their feelings for each other. Germán finds himself in a discordant relationship with Mariela. Mariela's brother is interested in Bruno. Bruno is with Romina, but wants to be with Germán. Playfully alternating between these two realities, the lovers find themselves drawn into ever new couplings in order to explore their intuitive feelings – cautiously, but at the same time prepared to lose everything. Marco Berger's feature premiered in the Panorama section at Berlin International Film Festival 2015.

Juana a los 12

Martín Shanly : 2014
About Twelve

Twelve-year-old Juana goes to a British school in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where she fails both socially and academically. A week away from the exams that will determine her future in the institution, she is surrounded by the same routine, going to class and trying to pull her social life back together. She is unreachable for the teachers, disconcerting to her mother, indifferent to her schoolmates, and a steady patient of psychologists and other health specialists. Juana is a mystery for those around her. Her almost permanent disconnection from the world is not due to a psychological problem but a conscious choice. The film draws certain parallels with the historical figure of Juana I de Castilla, who in 1500 was falsely diagnosed as insane. Unable to disobey the orders of the dictatorial regime of her father and brother, the young heiress lost the best years of her life imprisoned in loneliness, heartbreak and tremendous injustice. Now, embodied as a pre-teenage victim of an oppressive educational system, Juana is a girl about to start the arduous road to adulthood, facing a hostile world with censorship at every moment. Martín Shanly's feature debut premiered in competition at Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema 2014, and was winner of the Argentine Feature Competition at Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de La Plata 2014.
