Virág Zomborácz : 2014
Afterlife
Mózes is a diffident, insecure young man who has finished theology studies and lives with his family in a remote village. His relationship with his authoritative father is rather complicated; the pastor doesn't take his son very seriously and treats him with disdain. One day, the father dies unexpectedly – and his ghost begins appearing to Mózes, the only one in the family who can see him. The young man struggles to figure out how his father's spirit might find peace, and it seems that, for the first time in his life, he's been put in a situation in which he must take things firmly into his own two hands. At the same time, this is an opportunity to transform his relationship to his father. Virág Zomborácz's feature debut inventively handles the topic of mourning and coming to terms with the loss of someone close. Her film premiered in competition in the East of the West section at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2014.

Corrections Class
Lena is a bright girl with a disability who, after years spent studying at home, is keen to get back to school. She is assigned to a special class for disabled pupils who have to present themselves before a school commission at the end of the year in order to prove that they merit being moved back into a "normal" class. Her enervated teachers, however, show absolutely no desire to motivate the students and help them improve; on the contrary, they try to quash right from the start any interest Lena shows in more complex study material. Nevertheless, Lena soon involves herself in the school routine and gets together with classmate Anton. Yet their transparent happiness isn't to everyone's liking and repercussions soon follow. Adopting a documentary perspective, this drama portrays the unequal struggle of the individual in the face of institutional torpor, human prejudice and a society that tries to trip up people who are different. Ivan I Tverdovsky's feature debut was winner of Best Debut at Kinotavr Open Russian Film Festival 2014, and won the East of the West Award at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2014.

Bota
Iris Elezi & Thomas Logoreci : 2014
Bota, Albanian for "the world", is a café situated on the edge of a vast area of marshland in a remote part of Albania. Affable Juli, the life and soul of the café, takes care of her sick grandmother Noje and has various financial worries; her greatest desire, however, is to leave the place that brought only misery upon her family. Her friend, the attractive, temperamental Nora, is trying to work through her relationship with a married man, the café's enterprising owner and Juli's cousin, Ben. When construction begins on a new motorway near the café, it seems as if big changes are ahead for all of them. Set in a bleak region where, during communist supremacy, enemies of the regime were sent with their entire families against their will, the film evokes the atmosphere of a place where the past still encroaches upon people's lives. Iris Elezi and Thomas Logoreci's feature was winner of the FEDEORA Award when it premiered in the East of the West section at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2014.

Hide and Seek
Joanna Coates : 2014
In a deserted English country house, four young people from London move in together. They seek to challenge social conventions and their own tolerances by setting up a polyamorous commune, choosing total isolation as a form of emotional, intellectual, and political hiding place. Conventional life has left them lonely and damaged, but each desires to somehow throw off sadness and doubt, to open themselves up to new possibilities. Strange rules and rituals help loosen their inhibitions as, fighting cynicism and ghosts from the past, they slowly move from jadedness towards an insular, deeply unconventional joy. The durability of their new living arrangements is tested however by the arrival of an outsider who fails to get in tune with the foursome's radical spirit, thus bringing internal pressures to threaten their fragile world. A delicate interrogation of the emotional lives of contemporary young people. Joanna Coates's feature debut was winner of the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film when it premiered in the New Perspectives section at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014.

A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness
Ben Rivers & Ben Russell : 2013
Following the journey of a person's spirit or essence, rather than character, we experience three moments of existence. We follow an unnamed man through three seemingly disparate moments in his life. With little explanation, we join him in the midst of a 15-person collective on a small Estonian island; in isolation in the majestic wilderness of Northern Finland; and during a concert as the singer and guitarist of a black metal band in Norway. Marked by loneliness, ecstatic beauty and an optimism of the darkest sort, these three moments signal a radical proposition for the creation of utopia in the present. A hybrid document of the past, present, and future. Experimental and visionary filmmakers Ben Rivers and Ben Russell's collaborative feature premiered at Locarno Film Festival 2013.

Perpetual Sadness

The story takes us to a secluded village in the desert, where a political propaganda poster, ironically tells us that "the future is now". Time suffers from an unbearably quiet feeling. The aridity reigns and it goes deep into the spaces of a weary and dispirited existence. In that state of pure calm, the conflict of two psychologically abused women unfolds. They live their maternity dramatically as subjects in a fluctuating voltage between life and death. A suggestive tale reflecting the destinies of hundreds of Mexican village women who had to choose between their child and their partner in order to sustain their families.
